Way back in March I said "I'm particularly interested in how Web 2.0 tools are being used in an
innovative way for information skills delivery and development. I have a
fairly broad understanding of some of the digital tools but know
absolutely zilch about others. Hopefully I'll be able to focus on fine
tuning my areas of strength and discover new skills and new ideas to
move forward with."
How wrong I was; I have a fairly broad understanding of only a very small number of the digital tools, there is so much more out there! I didn't get time to fine tune my areas of strength nor see how the tools are being used in information skills delivery but what I did discover is, just like mastering anything you have to commit to it, spend the time to understand what makes it work and how it best works for you.
Digital tools are no different to any others, they are not a magical quick fix; yes they have opened up brand new worlds but so did the printing press (believe it or not). What I need to do to make these tools work for me is to follow my own advice, spend time to sort what I know within the context of what I need to happen personally and in my work environment and get organised! Wish me luck!
I agree that just getting a basic handle on these tools takes longer than I anticipated, and the real test I suppose will be seeing which of them we use and how we use them. I still haven't progressed past my path of least effort habits, now i just have a lot more tools I can just barely use. I too want to make them work for me, because most of them could be so useful if used in a seamless way.
ReplyDeleteGood Luck,
Jacob
I hear you! I think there are so many digital tools that it can become a bit much to try your hand at them all at once and then expect to remember everything they can do for us. It would be great after this assignment to maybe concentrate on a few that you particularly enjoyed or found quite challenging and explore those in more detail.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to do that with a few (especially those that may come in handy for future work) and one thing I do want to do more of is edit articles on TROVE - that was really fun!
I think you've done well considering the depth of tools out there.
