As a result of a very long commute to work everyday I have been using Dropbox for over a year now. I find it incredibly flexible, it allows for easy file sharing especially useful when work emails limit attachment size. As an example I will share a link to an orientation presentation I created, via Dropbox, to our group. The file is 8.8MB and I was unable to send it via email to a liaison team with another institution so I sent it via Dropbox. The tool is especially useful for improving work practices and efficiencies. I can store items easily in Dropbox and work on them from any other device as long as I have dropbox or internet access on it.
Why use Dropbox and not Google docs? Dropbox is not limited by file type. For my purposes that just wins it. Dropbox also works as an excellent backup option. When my laptop had a visit from the baby brother of the Blue Screen of Death all items I had sitting on my hard drive were lost. Thank-fully Dropbox had copies of all my previous assignments etc. As you can imagine I now back up in another spot too, just to be doubly sure.

Oh the joys of the cloud! I haven't tried Dropbox - I use JustCloud - but I'm keen to check it out. I agree with you 100 percent: tools like dropbox really do make things more efficient and flexible.
ReplyDeleteI also just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed reading your blog over the last few weeks. I don't always comment but I do read and it's been interesting and helpful :)
